Terms of service
Last updated 30 August 2026
By installing the Chess Wizard extension or using this website, you agree to these terms. If you do not, do not use them.
What Chess Wizard is
Chess Wizard is an analysis and study tool. It runs a chess engine on your own computer to evaluate positions, and it stores and reviews games you have finished so you can learn from them.
Acceptable use
Using engine assistance during live rated play violates the terms of service of chess.com and lichess.org. Both sites treat it as cheating and both will close accounts for it. That is their rule, applied on their platforms, and nothing here overrides it.
Chess Wizard is provided for analysis, study, and post-game review. You are solely responsible for how you use it and for complying with the rules of any platform you use it on. If your account is restricted, banned, or closed by a chess platform, that is between you and them; we cannot intervene and we do not offer refunds on that basis.
You also agree not to:
- Use the service to harass, impersonate, or collect information about other players.
- Attempt to access accounts, games, or data that are not yours.
- Automate access to the API beyond what the extension itself does, or attempt to overwhelm it.
- Resell or redistribute access to the paid service.
What the tool does not do
Chess Wizard does not move pieces, does not click, and does not simulate input of any kind. It has no autoplay and no deliberate-weak-move mode. Every action on the board is yours.
Accounts
You are responsible for keeping your password and your extension tokens secure. Tell us promptly if you believe either has been compromised; you can revoke any connected extension yourself from Settings.
We may suspend or terminate an account that breaches these terms. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will tell you why.
Subscriptions and payment
- Paid plans are billed in advance, monthly or annually, through Stripe.
- Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled.
- You can cancel at any time from Settings. You keep Pro features until the end of the period you have already paid for.
- We do not pro-rate refunds for partial periods, but if something has gone genuinely wrong, ask us — we would rather sort it out than argue about it.
- If we change the price, existing subscribers get at least 30 days' notice before it applies to them.
The free tier
Local engine analysis is free and unmetered. We intend to keep it that way, since it runs on your hardware and costs us nothing. We reserve the right to change the shape of the free tier, but not to retroactively bill you for something that was free when you used it.
Third-party software
Chess Wizard bundles Stockfish, which is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0, and other open-source components. See licences for the full list and for how to obtain the corresponding source.
Availability
We aim to keep the service up, but it is provided as-is, with no guarantee of uptime or of uninterrupted operation. Local analysis in the extension keeps working when our servers do not.
Chess platforms change their websites without warning. When they do, parts of the extension may stop working until we ship a fix. We monitor for this and treat it as urgent, but we cannot promise it will never happen.
Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Chess Wizard is provided without warranties of any kind, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
Changes
We may update these terms. Material changes will be emailed to registered users and the date at the top of this page will change. Continuing to use the service after that means you accept the new terms.
